A Future for General Motors

The GM Spot experience sketch looks into an alternative business model for General Motors.

People don’t really want to own cars. They want to own is a personalized experience or their car. The technology exists for owners to transfer their need for personalization to another part of the car ownership experience. Whether it’s a portable personal dashboard, RFID key, or a portable trunk, GM’s innovation teams has it in their power to find the answer and produce the experience. Meanwhile, the hard and heavy assets of owning a car can be left behind. GM Car Swap will give people the experience they really want and the sustainable solution they really need.

In our vision dealerships will become community centers, where customers will receive a wide array of supports for their transportation needs. The regular car lot will be redesigned as an inviting and desirable architectural experience, translating the car-owning experience into a community experience, whereby customers may choose from a wide array of transportation options, including the GM car swap plans. The GM Spot will be a destination in and of itself, as well as a gateway for multiple resources.

Today, live in a world created for cars. That world is fast becoming unsustainable for people and the ecosystems we need in which to exist and thrive. A sustainable environment and business model can be the core driving force for creating products and services in an ongoing innovation cycle. Innovation with sustainability needs development with deep knowledge and investment.  We imagine a bold solution that allows GM to explore a visionary new direction for their business.
